For Caelica! Fantasy AU; aged up to somewhere in her late teens

The sun is hot. The wind is hot. The cobblestones are hot, a fact driven home by the worn soles of her boots. Utena groans and wipes the sweat off her brow, asking herself one question: why did she come here again?

Oh, right, because this city was the only place for miles where someone could get a decent drink of water. Or anything, really, assuming you don't take your martinis with sand and mud. Which means that, until she earns enough coin for provisions and a caravan, she's stuck here.

So, goal number one: find some shade, and quick, before the sun scrambles her brain. So Utena quickens her pace, in search of a place to cool off.

[Not far from her was the edge of the marketplace, where a blonde woman at the same age range as Utena was. With how little cover the woman was wearing, she wasn't feeling too scorched unlike Utena. That, and she grew up in a desert.

She seems to have "taken" something from a store, and now the store owner's big brothers were intimidating Caelica to bring back what she stole]

I paid it right! You said two gold coins for this bag of apples, now you're saying three?!

[Utena freezes when she hears the shout; some argument over the market, it sounds like. Well, whatever. It's not her problem, it's not her problem...

...and as she turns around, she catches a glimpse of just how big the two goons are, and how small the other woman was in comparison...

...damnit. Before she knows it, Utena's walking towards the fight, despite her better judgment]

Hey, is there a problem here?

[caelica]

[the two goons just shifted their focus on Utena, giving her a death glare that worked on all of the people in the market so far]

They're charging me an extra gold coin for the food I bought, when they specifically said it costs two gold coins! Now the store owner sent his runts to intimidate and get more money out of me.

[princelyspirit]

[And Utena just glares back. As for her story... well, if she was a thief, she wouldn't stay and argue it, right? No, she'd just take the food and run.]

Come on, it sounds like a misunderstanding. So, why don't you make things easy for all of us and just let her go, hmn?

[caelica]

[The two giants just looked at each other, talking among themselves with just their eyes. A grin formed on their faces as they looked down on both the girls, grabbing the large swords on their backs and looking hostile toward each girl. The man on the left locked his eyes on Caelica, while the man on the right locked his eyes on Utena. All the while, Caelica is just confused on what the hell is going on, she looks more concerned about Utena than herself even while she clutches the bag of apples in her arms.

These men don't seem interested in negotiation, and only want more money for their employer's shop. Their grins widened and attacked both the girls. Caelica raised a barrier to protect them both]

I can't move and keep this barrier up, go ahead! I'll follow you!

[princelyspirit]

[Okay, there's no way a normal store owner would put up this much fuss over a bag of apples! But she didn't have time to think about their motives.]

What, and let you deal with these guys yourself?!

[She holds her ground, but she's not idle. As soon a Caelica puts up the barrier, she draws her sword, her eyes flicking between the goons and the mysterious girl at her side.]

[caelica]

No. Just enough to get some distance...!

[Caelica pushes the barrier forward, propelling both of her enemies a few meters back. It barely knocked the wind out of them as they recovered quickly. Caelica gulps, holding the bag of apples in her arm, and grabbed on Utena's hand with the other, making a run for it]

I should have listened this part of town was shady...! Gods.

[princelyspirit]

[Takes her hand and starts to make a run for it, glancing back to make sure the mooks are far behind]

We'll worry about that later! Just one thing - how well do you know the rest of this town?

[Because she has an idea]

[caelica]

Not well, I'm afraid. I just arrived here from the Western towns this morning!

[princelyspirit]

Don't worry, then, just follow my lead! When I say left, you turn and run to the left, got it?

[caelica]

[She doesn't know anything about Utena, but the stranger seems like an honorable person. That instantly clicked with Caelica, making the blonde put her faith on Utena despite the fact. Caelica nods determinedly at Utena]

Got it!

[princelyspirit]

[Good, they're both on the same page. Soon a turn in the road comes up and Utena quickens her pace]

Aaaand left!

[And to the left is a dangerous alley, part of an abandoned construction project, full of hanging beams and jagged, half demolished walls. It's a tight fit, but should be no trouble for a small, nimble girl like Caelica. Utena, however, does not follow her, instead making a sharp turn to the right. Where's she off to?]

[Caelica moved left as Utena instructed, deactivating her sword and holstering it. Caelica threw the bag of apples above her with all her might, her adrenaline kicking in and make time slow down from her point of view. With relative ease, Caelica gracefully moved through the tight spaces within seconds, making one last lunge to exit the half-made site. She rolled upon landing on the ground, extending her arms out to catch that bag of apples she threw earlier]

Whew!

[While catching her breath from that sudden burst of additional agility, Caelica looked around for Utena. She didn't really say what to do next...]
